The Cover from the CHERRIES ARE RIPE Play Brochure

Vilma Banky and her husband, silent screen idol Rod la Rocque, were asked by producer Archie Selwyn to appear in the play CHERRIES ARE RIPE written by Anita Loos and John Emerson. Vilma played Sybil Stereny and Rod, Count Sandor Bathyany. Supporting the La Rocques were Richie Ling, Gavin Muir, Peggy Allenby, Bert Wittly, Julie Chandler, and Juan Varro.

The Cast from Cherries Are Ripe

The setting is at a country estate in Hungary, which by the way is Vilma's homeland. The brochure goes on to say, "Filled with the kind of delightful memories and thrilling episodes that have made the authors famous, "Cherries Are Ripe" has been hailed as one of the season's biggest hits by the press and public of the cities in which it has been presented. For not only has it the John Emerson-Anita Loos inimitable spice, but it has the color of Hungary and gypsy life to flavor it. No vehicle could be more suitable to the talents of the stars than "Cherries Are Ripe". Miss Banky, herself a Hungarian, fits the role to a proverbial "T", while Mr. La Rocque as the dashing lovable scoundrel whose appeal is tremendously enhanced by his uniform makes a most believable Count Sandor Bathyany."

Beautiful Banky!
