The Band was formed in 1994 on
the initiative of Major George Whittingham, a retired
Salvation Army Officer and former Deputy Bandmaster of the
International Staff Band and for many years Bandmaster of the
Upper Norwood Band of the Salvation Army.
Major Whittingham saw the
opportunity to create a further avenue of service and
Christian fellowship for Salvationists either approaching or
already enjoying retirement.
‘The SLFB is open to
mature, competent players who fall into one or more of the following
categories-
i)
are active, retired or
former SA bandsmen
ii)
are members of or regular
attendees at other churches
iii)
are sympathetic to the
SAÂ’s ethos and are committed to the Christian faithÂ’
