Most of Stephen’s first class playing was as a professional trombonist in Military Bands and Orchestras. Early on he was principal trombonist of the Cumberland Youth Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the European Community Youth Orchestra.

He auditioned for the Army and became principal trombonist in the band now known as H. M. Royal Dragoon Guards. He toured extensively through mainland Europe, Canada and the USA. He also played for the then Leyland Daf Band before pursuing his conducting ambitions. He retired form playing in 1985 playing for the Brighouse & Rastrick Band and has since concentrated on conducting. He is well known in Northern England as a highly successful and respected band trainer and conductor, having consistently been a winner with all his bands over the last 15 years. He was also Musical Director of the famous Every Ready and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Bands. He has conducted at most of the major contests including the National Finals and the All England Masters Championships. Recently he has spent much of his time writing and arranging his own music, some of which can be found on sibeliusmusic.com.

He was awarded the Licentiates Diploma in Brass Band Adjudication (LDBBA) in 2001 and is only the fourth person ever to hold this Salford University awarded, diploma. He is a member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors (NABBC) and the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (ABBA). He is also a British Federation of Brass bands approved adjudicator.
