IMPORTANT NOTICE

FROM: Michael P. Jones, Curator

RE: Support for 3 Cascade Geographic Society Buildings & Land
in Rhododendron to be Designated Clackamas County Landmarks

DATE: March 19th, 2002

We need your support! Help us get our historic buildings and land in Rhododendron designated as
landmarks in Clackamas County. If we get this designation, there is grant money immediately
available to us for restoring
3 buildings, one circa 1890, and the others, built after the turn-of-the-century. Once we are designated,
this opens up doors for additional funding which is needed for new roofs and foundation work.

On Thursday, May 9th, at 7 p.m., the Clackamas County Historic Review Board
Will hold a public hearing to determine if 3 buildings owned by the Cascade Geographic Society,
as well as the 18 acres of land they sit upon, should be given a "Clackamas County Landmark"
designation. The Society, naturally, wants such a
designation.

The 3 buildings are the only survivors of about 12

structures which were, at one time, used as
part of a lumber camp which closed around 1930
during the Great Depression. What they were
used for prior to that time is unknown.

The property has several segments of the
Barlow Trail portion of the Oregon Trail
that crossed over Mount Hood.
There are archaeological sites on the land
related to Native American culture,
the Oregon Trail, and pioneer settlement.

Several important streams cross the property ---
Meadow Creek, Henry Creek,Little Henry Creek, and Whiskey Jack Creek.
The Cascade Geographic Society,in conjunction with the Oregon Department
of Fish & Wildlife and others, has been
restoring fish and wildlife habitat.
The land's meadows, wetlands, and forested areas
will be protected for all time.
~2~

The buildings are clustered on the southeast
corner of the property. They will be utilized in
a living history complex
(which will also include several small museums)
that the Cascade Geographic Society
wants to open next year. This complex will be known as the "Oregon Country Settlement".

We are in need of letters of support.
You don't have to live, own property,
or work in Clackamas County in order to comment.
You don't even need to reside in the State of Oregon.

Letters should contain one or more of the following, but put it in your own words:

~ Address the letter to Clackamas County Historic Review Board
(ATTENTION: Linda Preisz, Assistant Planner), Department of Transportation
& Development, 9101 S.E. Sunnybrook Blvd., Clackamas, Oregon 97015. Or,
FAX 503-353-4550.

~ Your name and address.

~ You need to state that you approve the designation
that will give the buildings and property landmark status.

~ State that this designation will help to save
historic buildings that reflect Mount Hood's history.

~ State that this designation will help to
educate people about Mount Hood's rich history.

~ State that this designation will help in
boosting tourism for Rhododendron and Mount Hood,
not to mention Clackamas County, in addition to
the nearby City of Portland.

Please make sure that we have a copy of your letter of support.
This way we can insure that it becomes part of the public record.

Attaining historic landmark status for our
buildings and property is an important goal for the
Cascade Geographic Society.
It will add a lot to our programs and allow us to continue to grow.

If you would like to attend the hearing
and also provide oral testimony,
we would sincerely appreciate it.
Thank you for your support.

Tim Dennehy of GhostQuest Productions and I spent 2 hours in the tunnel. What you see is an orb getting it's pic taken too.
During our last investigation of the Shanghai Tunnels our Electro Magnetic Detector was sure lighting up in the room where the indian is. Also we have positive readings where the cork boots lay.

When I was last at the Rhododendron property I picked up several pictures during the day of ectoplasms or mist, I Will be posting these pictures soon.

Both places are very active in the paranormal, but also very interesting and important in Oregon History. Work continues in the Shanghai Tunnels and your help is needed.

.

Regular Wednesday night work party, all "Tunnel Rats" are invited.
A perfect outing for "Tunnel Rats".
We can use the help of all Tunnel Rats.
Portland Shanghai Tunnels
Is a good way to spend the evening to keep a good
"Tunnel Rat"
from getting bored.

Please forward this to all interested in Portland's history.
Also let Robert or Michael know if you can make any of these dates.
THANK YOU

Hobo's will be opening its doors so crews working on the Shanghai Tunnels

can work on some special projects.

As you can see there is a lot of work to be done in these areas.
Your help is greatly needed in these projects.

I have heard that Hobo's has a wonderful menu available while you're there. Try it out, I plan to.

A Haunted Cabin in Rhododendren, Or
A few curious orbs come out to welcome the team of investigators, can you see them?

Northwest Paranormal Investigations has been working with the Cascade Geographical Society's Michael Jones on the Shanghai Tunnels but also the Oregon Country Settlement.

There is a lot more work needed to be done not only on the Portland Underground (Shanghai Tunnels) but also with the Oregon Country Settlement. Anyone interested in helping with either project, please contact Northwest Paranormal Investigations through either our comment page or through direct e-mail.

This photo of the indian was taken in the Shanghai Tunnels
A lot of orbs surround this indian.
Take a close look in the middle mirror
What do you see? And notice the image on the divider to the right.

The cabin we are investigating will be from what I understand the future home of Oregon Country Settlement Museum. This Settlement is part of the Barlow Trail and has a lot of history in itself. This Settlement will serve as a wonderful place towards the education of our Oregon ancestors and their travels to Oregon. From what I have seen of it so far I think everyone will enjoy visiting the Oregon Country Settlement as much as I have.

Notice the "Lady in the Mirror"...someone looking out, but no one looking in! She is estimated to be from the late 1800's era.
