The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Midlife and Beyond—by Pam D. Blair Ph.D.

E-zine, and more, for BoomerBabes!

The first step to living well, at any age, is to possess a positive attitude! Walking hand in hand with a Positive Attitude should be an Ageless Heart. Those whose lives are guided by these, stand armed to meet, and defeat, almost any negativity they encounter. Many women find the onset of their forties or fifties a time of life-altering change, that presents them with new challenges. Concerns about health, personal relationships, finances, may plague them, while dealing with physical and emotional changes they begin to experience at this time of life. No matter what trials a woman faces, adopting a positive attitude, and accessing an ageless heart, will prove invaluable.

Inspiring Women Everyday!

'You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest, that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.'
~Jan Glidewell~

'Within each woman lives the girl. If you listen closely, you can hear her voice, filled with the Joy, Hope, Wonder, and Love of Life!'
~Jeannine Schenewerk~

'Live your life with Honor, Faith, Love, and Courage, as your guiding lights, and you will never lose your way.'
~Jeannine Schenewerk~

This time of a woman's life can be one of incredible opportunity for a her to fully develop 'self'! With child-rearing years now past, or nearly past, a woman may now begin to enjoy life with the emphasis placed more upon enriching her 'self', through exploring new, or long-delayed interests, more fully. Many professional women who have long juggled career and family obligations, now may be enjoying the fruits of many years of dedicated service to their chosen careers. And, with children now raised, find they desire to place more time for 'self' at the head of their priority list. We women now entering our forties, fifties, have had the benefit of better medical care, better physical fitness and diet advice, to keep us physically and mentally fit, than had women of past generations. Hopefully, we have taken advantage of that care and information, and find ourselves in good health, and good shape, and prepared, at this time, for our ‘mid-life’, and , 'change of life'.

Many of us crucify ourselves between two thieves -
regret for the past and fear of the future.
~Unknown~
Don't go through life, GROW through life.
~ Eric Butterworth~

'GUARD YOUR HEALTH'

It's our duty to ourselves to take care of ourselves! DO have a PAP test annually, and a mammogram as often as recommended by your physician. If you're a smoker, endeavor to quit, or at the least, make an effort to consciously smoke less. If you enjoy alcoholic beverages, wine seems a far better choice for occasional consumption. Remember, moderation is always best where alcohol is concerned. If you're carrying too much weight, this can be as damaging to your health, as the above mentioned habits. And, do endeavor to incorporate some sort of exercise regimen into your daily life! The human body was designed to 'move'!

'Self-love, my liege, is not so vile a sin as self-neglecting.'
~William Shakespeare~

'Self' Appreciation'

Too many women who are fortunate enough to reach that amazing time known as ‘mid-life’, find nothing in which to rejoice. Our mates, our children, our chosen professions, all have demanded, and received, the very best of us. We have been caregivers for the greater portion of our lives, the original 'multi-taskers', placing 'self' at the very bottom of our 'to-do' list. Don't fear change, Ladies, it's a good thing! It's what life is all about. Step out, and into this time of life, with joy in your hearts! Give your 'self' consent to grow, learn, and develop fully. Take a long held interest, and delve into it, explore it, own it! Cultivate new interests, ones that captivate you, ones that excite your imagination, your creativity, ones that will alllow you to put into action, your accumulated wisdom, experience, and talents. We are so much more than we were, and so much less than we could be. We deserve the best of what we can do for ourselves.
'Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.'
~Louisa May Alcott~

Self-Image and The Visual Media
We, as a society, seem to allow a certain industry that should do nothing more than provide us with a few hours of inconsequential escapism, dictate the way we should view ourselves as women. If we were to give any credence to what we're being force-fed by this medium, we would then find ourselves beginning to believe a woman's 'self' worth is based solely on her outward appearance!
Remember no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
~Eleanor Roosevelt~

A Wake-Up Call

Women in our society have been systematically brainwashed for too long. Check out any online women's magazine. Spend a few minutes reading the message boards, and you'll be at once struck with the number of women searching for elusive 'miracle' beauty products, and enhancers. They are desperately seeking ways in which to transform themselves into the images of females depicted everywhere, in the visual media. Reality has been replaced with illusion. Belief in this illusion, and failed attempts at achieving it, have had, and will continue to have, dire consequences for far too many women; poor body image, low self esteem, severe depression, falling victim to dangerous eating disorders.

Read my article, ANA-MIA and the Mature Woman, concerning mature women and anorexia/bulimia, at:

The Century Project

Below you will find a link to an online, photographic exhibit, that may well give you just the dose of reality you need. It's a collection of nudes, by photographer Frank Cordelle. This collection depicts real women from the age of 0 to 100, with comments from these women that will, I quarantee, elicit an emotional reaction from you. Bear in mind, I said 'real' women. You will not find cosmetically or surgically enhanced 'illusions' in this exhibit. If you are comfortable viewing nudity presented tastefully and respectfully, I highly recommend you visit the exhibit. The experience may well change your life.

'The Century Project'

'Youth is a convenient 'mask' we wear for awhile, concealing the unformed 'self'. As we mature, and 'self' forms, our 'mask' fades away, revealing who we are, and what we have become, as human beings.'
~Jeannine Schenewerk~

'THE COMPLETE SELF'

A vitally important fact to realize about one's 'self' is that appearance is but a small part of a woman's total package! One must come to realize, 'self' worth is not determined by one's looks, one's age, the amount of money one has, or the sum of material items one accumulates. 'Self' worth comes from who, and what we are, within. Neglecting to nourish your mind and spirit, leads to a 'diminishing' of self, and you may one day find yourself deeply dissatisfied with your life, finding it a shallow existence. Therefore, give the outward its due, but realize, there must be depth of 'self' in order to achieve the status of 'a real woman'.

'You are unique, and if that is not fulfilled then something has been lost.'
~Martha Graham~
Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got.
~Janis Joplin~

'MIND and SPIRIT'
Educate and Stimulate 'Self'

Hopefully, we all realize that learning should be a life-long pleasure! Learn, for the sake of enriching 'self'. In this marvelous age, we literally have the world at our fingertips, via the World Wide Web! Right there, in front of you, sits your gateway to a vast number of learning resources, to which you have instant access. Practically anything you wonder about or desire knowledge about, you'll be able to discover. The possibilities are limitless! Learn, enrich your mind, stimulate your imagination, and creativity! Enrich your 'self'!

'If you want to know your past, look into your present conditions. If you want to know your future, look into your present actions.'
~Buddhist Saying~

A mature woman, armed with a positive attitude, an ageless heart, secure in 'self'-image, and blessed with good health, will find this time of life a wondrous adventure, indeed!
~Jeannine Schenewerk~
Everyone is the age of their heart.
~Guatemalan Proverb~

'Life loves to be taken by the lapel and told, 'I am with you kid! Let's go!'
~Maya Angelou~

'All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love'.
~Leo Tolstoy~
