Creating New Topics

There are several ways to create a new topic in RoboHelp. This tutorial shows you the method I most often use. The method you use is personal preference.

Tip
When you create a topic, RoboHelp uses footnotes to define certain properties for the topic. These footnotes appear to the left of the topic title in Word. Click here for a description of these topic footnotes.

To create a new topic:

  1. Type the name of the topic in a document that is part of your help project.
  2. Select the name.
  3. Right-click the selected name and select Insert Quick Topic.
    Tip
You can also press CTRL + q on your keyboard.

RoboHelp creates a topic with a title and topic identification that matches the name you typed.

If you create several topics with the same name following these steps, RoboHelp automatically begins to increment the topic IDs with numbers. For example, if you create four topics using "Learning RoboHelp" as the name, the ID for the first topic you create will be "Learning_RoboHelp." The ID for the second topic will be "Learning_RoboHelp_1." The ID for the third and forth topics will be "Learning_RoboHelp_2" and "Learning_RoboHelp_3" respectively. Once you create a topic, you can change topic titles and/or change topic IDs at any time.
